Confederate Portrait & Sword of Doctor and Surgeon Major Thomas H. Williams C.S.A

Model 1840 Medical Staff Officers Sword and Scabbard Inscribed on the reverse langet of the sword is " Dr. Thomas H. Williams

Confederate Portrait & Sword of Doctor and Surgeon, Major Thomas H. Williams C.S.A
He is shown in the uniform of a Confederate Medical Staff Officer with the Original M1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword shown in the photos with this name Inscribed on the langet lying across his legs.

Major Thomas H. Williams was appointed as the first "Medical Director of the
"Confederate Army of the Potomac" by General Order of Brigadier General
P. G. T. Beauregard, Commander of Confederate Forces, on June 27, 1861.
Surgeon Williams was in the field with the Army during the  "Battle of First
Manassas" in July 1861 and is mentioned in General Beauregard's battle report
concerning his medical services for the army. ( He had organized and setup a
field hospital nearby to treat injured and wounded Confederate soldiers.) Major
Williams was sometime later, also appointed to be " Inspector of Hospitals
in Virginia."   This is a fine example of a Folk Art type of a Confederate Portrait.  Confederate Army of the Potomac later became " The Army of Northern Virginia.

Model 1840 Medical Staff Officers Sword and Scabbard
Inscribed on the reverse langet of the sword is " Dr. Thomas H. Williams."
The straight blade of ovoid-elliptical section, decorated with etched panels of scroll on each side, marked "U. S. Medical Staff", with cast brass hilt bearing silver "MS" on langet with thirteen stars. There is also  a stand of arms and American Eagle with E. Pluribus Unum.  The blade is marked W. H. Horstmann Philadelphia.  Brass Scabbard with three decorated mounts.
